The Perfect Day in Olcott

If you’re a “lake person” — or just someone who’s after a bit of nostalgia — you’ll love spending the day at this quaint Lake Ontario hamlet and its environs.

Morning: Hit the Shops

Olcott is at its best under the summer sun, thanks to its proximity to glittering Lake Ontario and its nostalgic, beachside amenities. Start your day perusing the mix of eclectic boutiques housed on the boardwalk at Lakeview Village Shoppes, which are housed in a row of colorful, pier-side cottages. Be sure to have your phone handy — with its brightly painted signs, Adirondack chairs and views of the lake, the boardwalk is extremely photogenic! There’s more to peruse at Olcott shops than souvenirs and antiques, however. You’ll find several farmer’s markets nearby — we love the Newfane Farmer’s Market for fresh produce, baked goods and even delicious sausages.

Afternoon: Enjoy the Views

A day in Olcott is best spent by the water. Krull Park offers lake access, excellent views and prime picnicking, and is an easy place to while away an afternoon. Near the lighthouse, you’ll find a treasure for kids and for the kids at heart: a vintage “kiddie park” known as the Olcott Beach Carousel Park. All rides are 25 cents — even spins on the 1928 Herschell-Spillman Carousel. If you’d prefer to get out on the water, Olcott is a popular spot for accessing fishing charters. A captain well-versed in the lake and its tributaries can help you reel in a prize salmon or steelhead trout.

Evening: Relax by the Water

Nearby Wilson is a wonderful place to head for dinner. At Wilson Boat House, you can unwind harborside on the dock, watching the boats come and go as you tuck into steamed mussels, cedar-plank salmon or a fish fry basket. Afterwards, be sure to stop by Woodcock Brothers Brewing Co. for a local brew, or pop into Brownie’s Eats and Treats for a sweet end to a day well spent.
